Wireless and Mobility
Wireless and mobility covers nearly anything with a radio antenna and the devices that connect using these networks.
Wireless LANs are the replacement for the copper-based Ethernet networks, prevalent at the edge of every enterprise network. They consist of equipment based on the 802.11 series of standards. WLANs are used for general-purpose data networks and as internal wireless telephony networks (VoWLAN).
3G/4G mobile services are the evolution of the cellular telephone networks. These advanced services offer data rates from 500 kbps to over 1 mbps, placing them in the “wireless DSL” category. As mobile networks evolve from circuit switched to packet switched, voice itself will become just another data application.
WiMAX is a point-to-point and point to multipoint technology based on the 802.16e standard. This emerging standard is sometimes seen as a threat to 3G/4G mobile operators.
Within NTS, the following subjects are covered within this thread:
- Wireless local area networks (WLANs)
- Voice over WLANs (VoWLAN)
- Emerging standards (e.g., 802.11n)
- Wireless security
- Wireless management
- 3G/4G technologies and service offerings
- Mesh networks
- WiMAX
- Smartphones and other devices
This topic relates to the Network and Telecom coverage area - Planning and building network infrastructure for managing the convergence of voice, video, and data networks.
